:: lupinus ::

A rather dull, grey and chilly day here again - so much for being out and about in the school holidays, although Miss P has certainly been making the most of the holidays, making her own fun in the many forms that has been taking - gotta love that Sagittarian spirit!
Growing some of our food now means growing better soil and we have half of our vegetable garden growing crops all year round that either directly benefit the soil as they grow or when the plant matter is composted after it has matured.
These pretty blue lupins fall into the category of increasing soil fertility by fixing nitrogen from the atmosphere and converting it into a usable form in the soil.  As well, they produce a decent amount of green matter, which we cut up into small pieces and add to the hen's run where they compost it for us...maybe chomping a little bit on the way...?
What I didn't know and found out was that lupins have been food for more than 3,000 years in various parts of the world, not only for animals, but the 2-legged humanimal variety, too!
