:: rosa xxxix ::

Recently, at each birthday Miss P has been enjoying receiving a rose as part of her gifts and one rose we had to leave behind at our old house...
...it was called 'absolutely fabulous' and a glorious, golden-yellow floribunda rose it was, producing loads of luscious blooms in a radiant display...
...so sadness turned to joy this birthday as we managed to find another one!

another stunning rose from the Lady Norwood Garden at the Wellington Botanic Gardens - 'oranges and lemons' - thanks Dad :-) !

:: rosa xxxvii ::

Rose Leonardo da Vinci at the Lady Norwood Rose Garden in the Wellington Botanic Gardens, photo credit to my Dad, who visited there last week with my Mum.
Not too much to say as to leave on 'the' schedule this morning, I should officially not be having time to do a blog post LOL!
...off up further North this morning to Mangawhai Heads...

:: rosa xxxv ::

Two more rose photos and that would make ten percent of my flower photos this year roses - maybe there are lots around or maybe this is one of my favourite blooms?
...this one has been coming back to good health since we have been here, actually watering, feeding and pruning it...
...I like to believe that it enjoys the climbing frame in its West-facing position and basks the afternoon away, exuding subtle rose fragrance...and tones, of course, splendidly with the PINK Summerhill Stone cladding ;-)

:: rosa xxxiv ::

Watching flowers evolve (or die!) is something I enjoy the marvel of - leaving them in the vase to fully, voluptously, delicately express their all - well as far as a flower can, that has been snipped and (artfully, of course!) arranged into a vase in a house.
The texture, the colour and the form all metamorphose into a glorious, fragile yet powerful, exquiste 'spentness'...may we all hold the courage within us to be able to do the same!
[this rose is one from the same vase from Saturday just past]

rose
This photo was clearly not taken today, although the sun has blasted through a couple of times, between lovely, heavy drenchings...yay - I don't have to water the garden today - one thing off my list!

the wonder of nature...these roses were all drippy with raindrops...but only on the outside - the 'vital' centres were dry...heads bent forwards with the weight of the rain...a survival mechanism?

:: rosa xxvii ::

one day I'll figure out how to capture the actual colour through my camera/computer so it is accurate on the screen - the red in real life on this rose is much darker and more crimson red than tomato-sharp...and the yellow more deeply golden...sigh!

:: rosa xxvi ::

 the morning walk is not so very long, but there are so many lovely gardens to admire...
...this delicate apricot climbing rose, which I suspect may be the 'crepuscule' rose, has been left to ramble unrestrained on one of the still to be resolved, empty, post-quake properties - the house and outbuildings long demolished and just an incredible riot of nature taking over...
the bud - remarkably cerise

:: posie from Mrs Bottomley's ::

how lucky was I to receive this darling posie of rose, lilac, stock, freesia, curry plant, sage and geranium
Stunning...and such a bright note this afternoon for me...with gratitude :)

:: citrus x limon ::

The texture of flowers ranges so much - last week the rock rose was so crumpled and fine, it seemed delicate enough to tear...and here is a lemon blossom, waxy, matt and almost plastic-like.

:: freesia ii ::

Sitting here at the dining table, supposedly, mindfully doing one thing at a time - that would be eating the wholesome salad for lunch ;-) - but actually creating a blog post too ;-) - my nostrils are being tickled by the delicious scent of these beautiful freesia, as the Northerly breeze is literally forcing the smell in the door!
Not minding a bit!

:: lavandula spica ::

Our front garden will eventually be filled with lots of perennial plants - the ones that stick around year on year and give structure to a space, like the lavender I have been jamming in wherever possible.
These lovely floral shrubs grow relatively without any help and need little or no feeding and only really want for a bit of airy sunshine, they provide flowers for bees to forage in for weeks and weeks, provide a great, subtle 'grey-green' foliage colour that blends with our pink house well and they smell lovely too.
I really have no idea about lavender varieties, and have planted a few.  We have inherited some very gangly and previously uncared-for 'grosso' lavenders, which have remained, even with their contorted shapes, as their scent is truly heavenly and I can't bear to part with their strange, leggy, woody, mishapen forms until I have replacements growing happily!
Looking up the etymology of the name, lavandula, it appears most likely to have come from the French, 'lavandre', which is turn came from the Latin 'lavere' - to wash - and lavender is certainly a commonly-used essential oil and scent in many items associated with washing and cleaning.

:: freesia ::

Making a new garden takes time...we've been in this house for nearly 2 and a half years now...and still there are bit parts of the garden we are working on - and it is not a huge garden by any stretch...
...first we sorted out a decent run for our hens, then the vegetable gardens, some fruit trees and gradually, all the other bits...
...like a place to sit in the sun after doing some of this wonderful work in the garden!
This past Autumn we planted a couple of packets-worth of  Spring bulbs in the borders around the patio - and finally now we have these beautiful deep red freesias - so lovely to look at and they smell divine...can't wait until they become a mini-forest!

:: hyacinthoides hispanica ::

what I thought was a common bluebell growing in our garden is the paler, more upright 'Spanish Bluebell' version...the things you find out when you delve...

:: daphne iii ::

Finally, my Daphne bush is flowering...and I was almost too late to take a photo!
The madness that was a day-long hailstorm yesterday did its best to ruin the three little flower clusters that grew this year...
...here I am definitely only showing you the best bits!
...and Happy Friday :)

:: viola odorata iii ::

A lively storm is whipping its way around the traps today, keeping me inside as much as possible - so far there has been lashings of wind, rain, hail, sleet and then I'm sure I spied a few snowflakes as well!
I'm definitely not going to dally about outside spying and snapping pics of flowers today, no siree!
Here's the wee bunch of violets I picked yesterday in preparation for today, knowing I would want to sniff their luscious scent on the table next to me
and at least save some from the ravages of this mighty end of Winter/Spring storm...yum...here's to tomorrow being calmer again :-)

:: muscari ::

Another sweet Spring flower - the grape hyacinth - now blooming in decent numbers at the base of one of our espaliered apples...
...named after the Greek, muschos meaning 'musk', referring to it's fragrant nature.
