:: calendula officinalis ::

From such humble beginnings as a few ragged seedlings rescued from their destiny of the local kindergarten compost heap, these glowing orange beauties have really made themselves home in our gardens in just 18 months.  I have a lot to be thankful for in the common marigold or pot marigold aka calendula officinalis as these have really been wonderful for filling up large areas with vibrant vermillion when we had nothing else to plant.

Calendula easily earns its place in my garden with many uses apart from their beauty - and often when there is not much else blooming - they can be cut and enjoyed indoors, petals scattered through a salad for edible colour and infused in oil for cosmetic and medical purposes. Even the act of dead-heading them (which is a frequent need) is beneficial if doing so bare-handed.
What uses do you put the calendula to?
